I suggest re-watching mid period Truffaut for a better understanding of what the directors are trying to grasp with their penetrating dialogue and insightful mirth.

While both your hypothesis prove to provide intellectually stimulating concepts. I propose another method of perception, perhaps the authors intended the content to manifest more our own inner-struggle with our concept of self and spirit.

Surely the scene where David Penn and the body guard Larry Gibbons earn their room and board is meant to inspire a direct link to our own battles with our inner demons. And possibly to an even larger extent, the human race's struggle to understand it's own need and desire for darkness and destruction.

After all, if there is no darkness, how can there be light?
